AFCON 2025: Kenya’s Peter Kamaku in charge of Egypt vs Senegal cracker
By Joel Masibo, January 14, 2026Kenyan referee Peter Waweru Kamaku has been named the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for the highly anticipated Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2025 semi-final cracker between Senegal and Egypt, scheduled for Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at the Tanger Stadium in Morocco.
Kamakau has been an outstanding match official at the top CAF tournaments, making him one of the most sought-after match officials on the continent in the present generation.
Kamaku’s relation with football
He has been a referee in the Kenyan Premier League since 2013 and a FIFA-listed referee since 2017. Kamaku is also a professor of pure mathematics at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology.

According to the match officials’ lineup released by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the heavyweight encounter will kick off at 8:00 pm EAT and will be overseen by a multinational team of officials drawn from across the continent.
Gabonese referee Pierre Ghislain Atcho will take charge as the centre referee, assisted by compatriot Boris Marlaise Ditsoga as Assistant Referee 1. Styven Moutsassi Moyo will serve as Assistant Referee 2, while Amos Abeigne Ndong has been appointed Assistant Referee 3.
The fourth official duty will be handled by Jean-Jacques Ngambo Ndala.
In the VAR room, Kenya’s Kamaku will play a key role in reviewing crucial decisions, assisted by Letticia Antonella Viana as Assistant VAR 1 and Elvis Guy Noupue Nguegoue as Assistant VAR 2. The referee assessor for the match will be Inacio Manuel Candido.

Kamaku’s appointment is another significant milestone for Kenyan officiating on the continental stage, underlining the growing trust CAF has in referees from the country to handle high-pressure fixtures involving Africa’s football giants.
The Senegal vs Egypt showdown is one of the most attractive fixtures of the tournament, pitting former African champions against the seven-time AFCON winners, and is expected to draw massive attention from fans across the continent and beyond.
