AFC Leopards and Nzoia Sugar will face off on Saturday at the newly refurbished Masinde Muliro Stadium in Bungoma County in the Madaraka Cup on Saturday June 1, 2024.
The match will be played at 3:00 p.m., with Leopards seeking a win after missing out on the league and FKF Cup in the 2023/24 season.
AFC Leopards eye win
Nzoia Sugar will also be chasing a good result, although their relegation was sealed following the 2023/24 campaign.
In 2022, Gor Mahia emerged as the Madaraka Day Cup champions after defeating their eternal rivals AFC Leopards 6-5 (1-1) in post-match penalties.
Collins Shivachi gave Leopards a narrow 1-0 halftime lead in the 34th minute. In the final half, Gor leveled the scores through Austin Odhiambo, who capitalized on a slow reaction from Leopard’s keeper Levis Opiyo. With no winner at the end of the full 90 minutes, the match proceeded to penalties.
Esilaba Tedian, Washington Munene, Victor Omune, Lopaga Josephat, and John Makwata successfully converted Ingwe’s opening five penalties.
Gor captain Philemon Otieno, Samwel Onyango, Benson Omalla, Dennis Njire, and John Macharia did the same for Gor Mahia.
AFC Leopards loss
Gor gained the upper hand after Peter Thiongo missed Leopards’ sixth penalty, and Austin Odhiambo sealed the victory with a low shot, giving Gor Mahia a 6-5 win and Ksh 1 million in prize money.
In 2023, Zoo FC pulled off an upset by defeating FKF Premier League side AFC Leopards to clinch the Mashujaa Cup with a final score of 2-1 at the Wilson Kiprugut Chuma Stadium (formerly known as Kericho Green Stadium).
AFC Leopards fielded a squad combining senior players with members of the youth team, bolstered by the return of Victor Omune from injury.
