People Daily Newspaper features reporter Jasmine Otieno was honoured over the weekend with the prestigious African Climate Change and Environmental Reporting (ACCER) Award in the Opinion/Commentary category.

Her winning article, published in the People Daily newspaper under Mediamax Networks Limited, was a powerful call to action, focusing on equipping women to tackle the effects of climate change.

“I am very excited and humbled for this win. I’m thankful to the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance for recognising and rewarding our efforts and commitment as journalists in highlighting critical environmental issues and advocating for climate justice,” Jasmine said.

The ACCER Awards, organized by the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), have become a beacon for recognizing exceptional journalists across Africa who shine a spotlight on environmental and climate change issues. The 2024 edition, held on August 31 in Abidjan, celebrated 16 outstanding journalists out of 478 entries from across the continent. Jasmine’s article stood out for its profound insight and ability to connect climate change directly to the lives of women, who are often on the frontlines of its impacts.

“The winning story was my first opinion article on climate change. I decided to write this article, especially motivated by the devastating effects the floods had on Kenyan families, particularly women, which we all witnessed and reported about,” she shared.
