A 20 year-old-woman has been detained for 14 days as police investigate the alleged murder of her husband.

Hegrah Bonareri Wanjiku, a mother of one, is suspected of killing Patrick Mwaniki Njagi at the Ngamate Apartments in Zimmerman, Nairobi, on August 24, 2024.

Directorate of Criminal Investigations officer Corporal Charles Ombogo told Makadara Principal Magistrate Mary Njagi that the matter was reported by Sospeter Gaitho at Kasarani Police Station.

Police arrested Wanjiku after the witness told police that a man had been stabbed to death in the apartment building.

Psychiatric evaluation

The suspect, the officer said, would be taken to Mathari Mental Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation before she could stand trial for the alleged murder.

An autopsy on the deceased man was also planned to determine the cause of death, Ombogo told the court.

He also said that blood samples collected from the scene of the crime had not been submitted to the Government Chemist for a DNA analysis.

The deceased man, who was a mobile phone technician in the Nairobi city centre, is said to have been stabbed in the chest during a domestic quarrel.

“This court has admitted the application by the officer considering the magnitude of the offence, noting that a life was lost. I hereby admit the plea of detention for 14 days,” the magistrate ruled.

Wanjiku will be detained at the Kasarani Police Station until September 10, when the matter will be mentioned for further directions.
