Wetang’ula urges vigilance as heavy rains continue to wreak havoc
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has urged Kenyans to remain vigilant as heavy rains continue to cause destruction across several parts of the country.
Taking to his official X account on Saturday, March 7, 2026, following widespread flooding that has claimed lives and destroyed property, Wetang’ula extended his condolences to families who have lost loved ones due to the ongoing downpour.
The Speaker noted that the country is experiencing severe weather conditions, with forecasts from the Kenya Meteorological Department warning that heavy rainfall is likely to continue in many regions.
“In light of the heavy rains that have pounded many parts of the country, resulting in loss of life and widespread destruction, I extend my deepest condolences to the families of those affected by the devastating downpour,” Wetang’ula said.

He urged Kenyans, especially residents living in flood-prone areas, to stay alert, follow safety guidance issued by authorities, and take necessary precautions.
Wetang’ula specifically called on communities located in low-lying zones to consider moving to safer or higher ground whenever flood warnings are issued.
“Following the advisory issued by the Meteorological Department warning of continued heavy rainfall, I urge all Kenyans and particularly those residing in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant, adhere to the directives issued by the authorities, and take necessary precautions to stay safe, including moving to higher ground,” he stated.
Swift response
The Ford Kenya party leader also appealed to government agencies at both national and county levels to respond swiftly to distress situations arising from the ongoing rains.
He called for enhanced disaster response coordination to ensure timely rescue operations and mitigation of further losses.
“I also call upon the relevant government agencies at all levels to act swiftly and enhance their response to any distress situations arising from the ongoing rains,” Wetang’ula said.

Flood’s death toll
The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed twenty-three casualties, with at least twenty-nine people successfully rescued from various locations.
“The National Police Service wishes to update the public on the ongoing search and rescue operations following the heavy overnight rainfall, which has caused widespread flooding and disruption across various parts of Nairobi,” NPS said in a statement issued on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
The police also confirmed that the heavy downpour has led to the destruction of property, road closures, and the displacement of residents within Nairobi.
“The torrential rains have led to significant flooding, unfortunately resulting in 23 fatalities so far, the destruction of property, road closures, and the displacement of residents,” NPS added.
