National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has lauded Raila Odinga‘s efforts in ensuring stability and national healing after intense anti-government protests.

Wetang’ula, Ford Kenya’s chief, is aligned with the governing Kenya Kwanza coalition that came under immense pressure from unsatisfied Gen Z. The youth put William Ruto’s administration under the national and international spotlight before the president capitulated, withdrew the controversial Finance Bill 2024, and dissolved the cabinet before he nominated new Cabinet Secretaries.

In the new cabinet, four slots have been given to Raila’s Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and Wetang’ula says the opposition’s gesture to work with the government will foster national unity.

“It is through the selfless and patriotic actions of the political class that national healing will be stimulated after the recent period of youth-led demands for reforms and improved governance.

“This has been reinforced by the opposition leader, Raila Odinga, who responded positively to President William Ruto’s call for the formation of a broad-based Cabinet, thereby fostering the nation’s healing and stability,” Wetang’ula said in a post on X on Saturday, July 27, 2024.

Message for Azimio leaders

Kalonzo Musyoka, Eugene Wamalwa, and Martha Karua, who has pulled her Narc Kenya party out of the Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya Alliance, have maintained their stance of not joining hands with the government.

Wetang’ula, a former Bungoma County Senator and Sirisia Member of Parliament, wants Kalonzo, Wamalwa, and Karua to soften their stance and join Ruto’s in fostering national unity.

“During the laying of the foundation stone ceremony for the Webuye East TTI construction, I called upon other Azimio leaders to abandon their hardline stance and collaborate in forming a government of national unity, essential for achieving Kenya’s economic stability and prosperity,” he added.

The Speaker also called on regional leaders to work with the government.

“I appealed to Luhya leaders opposing President Ruto’s initiatives, reminding them that Kenya’s well-being surpasses individual interests and urging them to respect the leaders appointed to serve in the government,” he concluded.

The Ruto-Raila new brotherhood is expected to dominate national headlines given that they were fierce competitors in the 2022 presidential election race.
