Wetang’ula implores undecided ODM leaders to join Raila in supporting Ruto

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has challenged a section of Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leaders to join Raila Odinga in support for William Ruto and his Kenya Kwanza administration.

Taking to his X page on Sunday, August 10, 2025, Wetang’ula urged those yet to make up their minds about the president to now take a bold stance on the president’s side.

“Echoing ODM leader Raila Odinga’s pledge to back President William Ruto beyond 2027, I urged undecided ODM leaders to rally behind his second-term bid,” he stated.

His plea comes days after Raila dismissed those opposed to the current regime and the proponents of the ‘Wantam’ chants as inconsequential.

In what was a recent endorsement of his broad-based pact with Ruto, Raila issued a fervent appeal to those clamouring for Ruto to serve only one term, urging them to grant the broad-based government sufficient space to fulfil its mandate and to withhold judgement until the 2027 General Election.

“I wish to urge the broad-based government’s detractors to grant us the room we require and to reserve their verdicts for 2027. We have made it clear that this broad-based government will remain in place until the 2027 elections, after which we shall chart the path forward,” Raila declared with conviction.

He underscored that it is the sovereign will of the Kenyan people that will ultimately determine the duration of any leader’s tenure, expressing unwavering confidence that when the time comes, the government will stand before the electorate with transparency, laying bare its achievements and future aspirations.

Despite withstanding different storms since the signing of the broad-based government arrangement five months ago, officials within the Orange party have remained torn between the new association with the ruling United Democratic Alliance.

The dissenting faction has been led by influential figures in the party, such as Nairobi senator Edwin Sifuna, Siaya Governor James Orengo, and Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, among others.
