By , January 28, 2026

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula has said that the government is determined to ensure a smooth transition into the CBE education system.

Wetang’ula has noted that the education transition from the 8-4-4 to the current CBE 2-6-3-3 has faced both successes and challenges, the government is committed to ensuring that this transition becomes a success.

Speaking in Naivasha during a retreat with the MPs on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Wetang’ula has noted that a review of the transition is necessary to develop policies that will serve the country effectively. Wetang’ula has noted that the issues raised on education needs urgent intervention and hence the need to address the issues.

“I have challenged the CS Education to establish guidelines for consolidating duplicated education bursaries into a single central basket for efficient distribution to the intended beneficiaries. These issues in education are critical, and I have guided the leadership of the National Assembly, together with the Committee on Education, to convene an urgent meeting to resolve the challenges and allow school-going pupils and students to attend to their education properly.” Wetang’ula said.

Issues of concern

During the session, MPs raised very pertinent issues about the inadequate distribution of resources and teachers, citing cases in a school with about 100 students and 28 teachers, and another school with 300 students and two teachers; hence, the need for rationalization. Lawmakers have put Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba on the spot over the gaps in transition from Junior to Senior school, funding disparities, high uniform costs and weak enforcement of government policy.

The MPs also raised issues of corruption in schools where there have been fraud cases in desks and uniform purchase, the members calling on the ministry education to get to the ground to assess the situation.

The cabinet secretary was attending the retreat to have an opportunity to discuss contemporary education sector issues, including the Grade 10 transition, teacher preparedness, infrastructure development and education sector financing, where the members had a question-and-answer session, raising key issues affecting the education sector in the respective regions that they represent.
