Ward Reps ordered to refund Sh7m spent on trip
A section of Homa Bay County Assembly Members and staff are on the spot over alleged misappropriation of Sh7.88 million on a trip.
Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has directed about 50 MCAs, some staff members and County Assembly Service Board to return the money they illegally received as allowances during a trip to Mombasa.
The directive follows completion of investigations, which began in December last year.
Anti-graft agency established that the MCAs and Assembly staff pocketed Sh146,000 each in allowances contrary to the duties they were to undertake in Mombasa.
In a letter copied to Assembly Speaker Elizabeth Ayoo (pictured), EACC indicated that the trip happened between September 8 and 12, 2021. “Having completed investigations, EACC wants the Ward Reps to refund the cash and deposit the same in the commission’s Asset Recovery Account,” the letter.
Report showed the MCAs stayed in Mombasa for two instead of five days as previously scheduled.
At the same time, EACC is also investigating how the Assembly Service Board reached a deal with M/s Hartland Enterprises Limited Company to construct an office block for MCAs in Homa Bay town.
