Waive rent for three months, landlords urged

Landlords have been urged to waive rent for three months following the economic disruption caused by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Landlords and Tenants Association of Kenya (Latak) yesterday also asked the government to grant landlords servicing loans from commercial banks a six-month moratorium to cushion them from the effects of forfeiting the rents.
Latak warned that more than 17 million Kenyans, who are tenants, would be unable to meet their obligations of paying rent.
This would imply that another five million landlords, especially those servicing loans, would be in an economic crisis.
“As Latak, we champion for reducing of conflicts between landlords, tenants, estate agencies and auctioneers through mediation,” they said.
The officials spoke during a joint press conference with the Matatu and Boda Boda Operators Federation of Kenya, who asked the government to consider reducing levies on fuel by at least 50 per cent and also consider parking fees.
