Vincent Chemitei dominates UDA Baringo senatorial primaries in e-voting milestone

By , September 21, 2025

Vincent Kiprono Chemitei of Mochongoi Ward, Baringo South, has clinched the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) senatorial primaries in Baringo County, securing 34,612 votes in the first-ever electronic voting exercise.

His closest challenger, Wycliffe Kipsang Tobole, garnered 24,683 votes, while Daniel Kiptoo finished third with 15,343.

The other five aspirants – Sylas Tochim, Reuben Chepsongol, Joseph Cherutoi, Isiah Kirukmet, and Linus Kamket – each polled fewer than 150 votes.

The landmark e-voting exercise was hailed as transparent and efficient, with minimal technical hitches.

County Election Commissioner Mary Mutinga praised the system as free and fair, urging the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to consider adopting it for future elections.

Residents, however, expressed mixed feelings.

Evans Kamuren from Sintaan village in Baringo South dismissed the gadgets, saying, “You know this is Kenya, as far as politics is concerned, results can be manipulated to favour someone. I can’t trust at all unless they bring back the ballot boxes and papers—then I will trust the process.”

In contrast, Moses Kimalit from Saimo Soi Ward, Baringo North, lauded the innovation, saying, “I believe in these gadgets, as they have given us the best electronic voting process with credible results.”

Following his decisive win, Chemitei thanked his supporters and pledged unity.

“I am humbled by the overwhelming support from the Baringo people. This is not just my win but a collective victory for unity, transparency and a brighter future. I will work tirelessly to unite and transform our great county,” he said.

While Tobole has yet to concede, speculation is rife about his next political move.

Kiptoo, however, accepted the outcome and congratulated Chemitei, pledging continued service to the party. Tochim, contesting the seat for the second time after his 2022 defeat, also conceded.

Though some voters reported one-time password glitches, the UDA IT team quickly resolved the issues, allowing the process to proceed smoothly.

As the November 27 by-election approaches, all eyes remain on Chemitei’s rivals, even as he affirms his readiness to serve without fear or favour.
