The United States Embassy in Nairobi has announced that it will remain closed on Monday, September 1, 2025, in observance of Labour Day, a federal holiday in the United States.

In a statement posted on its X account on Friday, August 29, 2025, the embassy urged the public to take note of the temporary closure, noting that normal operations will resume the following day.

“The embassy will be closed on Monday, September 1, in observance of Labour Day,” the Embassy stated.

Labour Day proclamation

The announcement was accompanied by a proclamation from US President Donald J. Trump, marking this year’s Labour Day celebrations.

In his message, Trump declared September 1, 2025, as Labour Day and called on all Americans to observe the holiday through programs and activities that honour the role of workers in building the nation’s prosperity and future.

“From the earliest days of our American story, our Nation’s future has been moulded by the skill, determination, and unwavering resilience of the American worker,” the proclamation read.

“NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim September 1, 2025, as Labour Day,” the proclamation added.

Similar closure

This follows another temporary closure on July 4, 2025, in observance of America’s Independence Day, a federal holiday that commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.

This day, formally recognised by an Act of Congress in 1870, is observed annually by American diplomatic missions worldwide, including the one in Kenya, which suspends operations to honour the founding of the United States.

According to a notice shared on the U.S. Embassy Nairobi X account on July 4, 2025, the embassy resumed normal operations on Monday, July 7, 2025.

“The embassy will be closed Friday, July 4, in observance of U.S. Independence Day,” the post read.
