The University of Nairobi (UoN) has issued a clarification on a section of graduates missing from the 2024 graduation list.

In a statement on Thursday, December 12, 2024, the University management disclosed that no qualified student has been denied a chance to be part of the 72nd graduation ceremony scheduled for December 13, 2024, adding that the reports of 200 students missing from the list circulation on social media are false and baseless.

The management went on to explain that degrees are awarded only upon completion of the academic program requirements and final approval by the University’s Senate.

“We wish to address the recent allegations concerning the misrepresentation that approximately 200 qualified students are missing from the graduation list for the 72nd graduation ceremony of the University of Nairobi, scheduled for December 13, 2024,”

“The University categorically affirms that no student who has qualified has been cleared and subsequently approved by the Senate has been denied the opportunity to graduate. Degrees are conferred only upon the successful fulfilment of the respective program requirements and final approval by the Senate,” reads part of UoN management’s statement.

According to the management, any student who has not been cleared by the Senate is not eligible for graduation, adding that no cases of qualified students, cleared and approved by the Senate have been excluded from the graduation list reported.

“It is crucial to clarify that any student who has not received the necessary certification and approval from the Senate is not eligible for graduation. We are not aware of any cases in which qualified students, cleared and approved by the Senate have been unjustly excluded from the graduation list,”

“Graduation represents the culmination of our academic processes and we take great pride in ensuring that all eligible students have the opportunity to graduate,” UoN added.

In addition, the University disclosed that 45 students who were to be part of the upcoming graduation submitted late appeals to the Senate after the established deadline adding that only 30 of the appeals were approved for graduation.

Meanwhile, the university further stated that it notified all students of the graduation process and requirements two months ago.

“Earlier in October 2024, the University issued a circular to notify students of the graduation process and requirements. This was followed by subsequent reminders via email and social media. All eligible candidates were urged to resolve any outstanding fee balance, including graduation fees, to ensure their participation.

“We would like to confirm that 45 students submitted late appeals after the established deadline. In response, a special Senate meeting was convened, during which 30 of these appeals were approved for graduation, we appreciate the understanding of all stakeholders as we continue to uphold the integrity of our academic programs and graduation processes,” UoN stated.
