Haiti’s UN-backed Gang Suppression Force (GSF) has pledged to dismantle all criminal gangs across the country, signalling a major shift in the nation’s security landscape.

The announcement comes days after the transition from the Multinational Security Support Mission (MSSM) to a fully restructured and heavily armed force.

Kenyan Force Commander Godfrey Otunge, leading the GSF, said on Wednesday, November 20, 2025, that the reorganisation is designed to unify the Haitian National Police (PNH), the Armed Forces of Haiti (FAd’H), and the GSF under one mission.

“This was not a cosmetic shift or a change in name. It is a complete reorganisation of Haiti’s security machinery,” he said.

“It is a complete reorganization of Haiti’s security machinery, bringing together the capabilities, personnel, and intelligence of all national forces under one coordinated mission: dismantling the gangs that have terrorized the country.”

The GSF has deployed operational assets on land, at sea, and in the air to conduct targeted, intelligence-led operations. Persistent patrols in key areas are designed to disrupt networks, seize weapons, and neutralise armed elements resisting authority. Commander Otunge said recent gang threats show desperation rather than strength.

The force emphasised that law is the only authority in Haiti. Anyone harming civilians or challenging the state will face swift and lawful consequences. Citizens are urged to remain vigilant and support security operations. Public cooperation is crucial in defeating gangs and restoring order.

Haiti celebrates football triumph

The GSF’s announcement coincides with a historic achievement for Haitian football. The national team has qualified for the 2026 World Cup, their first appearance in 52 years.

Haiti secured top spot in its group with a 2-0 victory over Nicaragua, finishing ahead of Honduras and Costa Rica. The victory came on November 18, the anniversary of the Battle of Vertières, which secured Haiti’s independence in 1804.

The GSF congratulated the team, noting that stability in the country allows citizens to achieve success on the international stage. The team’s qualification highlights Haiti’s potential not only in security but also in national pride and sports achievement.

The formation of the GSF followed a United Nations Security Council vote in September approving Resolution 2783. Kenya had led the MSSM since 2023, deploying more than 700 police officers to support stabilisation efforts.
