‘Uhuru should focus on Covid-19,drought in his address’- Poghisio says
West Pokot senator Samuel Poghisio has asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to focus more on Covid-19 pandemic and the current drought ravaging the most parts of the country.
According to Poghisio, the elephant in the room in President Uhuru’s address will be COVID-19, followed by the drought.
“The President will address a joint sitting of Parliament, which may be his last, however the elephant in the room will be COVID-19 and the drought ravaging the country,” Poghisio said.
President Uhuru Kenyatta is expected to address the nation and reveal his development legacy in a joint sitting of the two Houses of Parliament this afternoon.
His address comes at a time when the country is grappling with the effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic, ailing economy and heated election campaigns.
In his address, the President is expected to give a report on the major strides his administration has made over the last few years, including the state of the national security.
Majority leader and Garissa Town MP Aden Duale said that Uhuru had the opportunity to lay out his legacy to Kenyans.
“This is an opportunity for the President to tell Kenyans his legacy and assure Kenyans that he will oversee a free, fair, credible and peaceful election and that he will hand over power according to the transition with the constitution,” Duale said.
In a previous press conference, leaders from northern Kenya asked President Uhuru Kenyatta to declare the drought that is currently ravaging the region a national disaster.
They said, although the ongoing drought has affected many parts of the country, it is worse in northern Kenya.
