Uganda’s Chief of Defence issues 48-hour ultimatum to Bobi Wine to surrender to police
Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has issued a stern warning to opposition leader and National Unity Platform (NUP) party leader Bobi Wine, demanding that he surrender to police within 48 hours. The statement comes amid heightened tensions between the government and supporters of the NUP, as security forces intensify operations against the opposition.

In a statement shared on X on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, Muhoozi singled out Bobi Wine, whom he referred to as “Kabobi,” and threatened legal consequences should he fail to comply with the ultimatum.
“As for Kabobi, the permanent loser, I’m giving him exactly 48 hours to surrender himself to the Police. If he doesn’t, we will treat him as an outlaw/rebel and handle him accordingly,” Part of Muhoozi’s statement reads.
The Chief of Defence also claimed that security forces have already neutralised members of the NUP, highlighting the intensity of ongoing operations targeting opposition networks.
“We have killed 22 NUP terrorists since last week. I’m praying the 23rd is Kabobi,” Muhoozi added.

The statement comes against a backdrop of escalating political violence in Uganda, with multiple reports of clashes between security forces and NUP supporters.
Bobi Wine and NUP leaders have previously condemned government crackdowns, calling out security forces for using excessive force against civilians and party members. Human rights groups have called for restraint and adherence to legal procedures, warning that targeted actions against political leaders could destabilise the region.
Bobi Wine decries military harassment at his home
Bobi Wine has called out military personnel stationed inside his compound for threatening and intimidating residents, claiming their actions put civilians at risk.

Bobi Wine described a tense encounter that occurred late last night, amid claims of threats made by the Chief of Defence, who is also President Museveni’s son.
“Last night, as Museveni’s son was making these threats to kill me and gloating over killing 22 of our supporters (in reality, he has killed over 100 since last week), the military who are stationed inside our compound yet again banged my house doors as they sang profanities, ordering the occupants to come out of the house if they’re men. The people at my home say the criminals seemed to be drunk,” Bobi Wine wrote.
