Uganda on Sunday marked the 34th anniversary of the Liberation Day, when the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) took over power after a five-year guerrilla war.

President Yoweri Museveni presided over the commemoration in the western district of Ibanda under the theme, “Celebrating NRM’s patriotic struggle that ushered in national unity and socio-economic transformation.”

Among the foreign dignitaries who attended the celebrations was former Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete.

Ninty-five people were awarded medals for their contribution during the liberation struggle and independence of the country.
