Uasin Gishu student reaches her dream school after 70km trek
By Kiprono Keileb, January 28, 2026A young student from Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet County, has finally joined the school she had long dreamed of attending for her Grade 10, after a gruelling 70-kilometre journey to Uasin Gishu.
In a statement shared on X on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi said the trek, which Victorine Chepchumba made carrying a rusted school metal box, captured public attention for her determination and struggle.
Chepchumba said her parents were not able to raise the fees to allow her to start her Grade 10 learning.
“Wazazi wangu hawajiwezi nikaamua kutulia nyumbani mpaka nikaamua kuenda mguu pekeangu hadi shule,” she painfully narrated.
She added that her parents could not afford food at the time because they had no source of income.
“Hata walikuwa wanajitahidi kupata pesa nitumie kununua chakula nikienda shule, hawana pa kutoa hio pesa, wakaniambia nijitaftie niweze kupata kile nitakula nikienda,” she stated.
“Seeing Victorine Chepchumba crying, carrying a rusted school metal box and walking over 70km to try her luck at Segero Adventist, broke my heart. I reached out to her mum, Purity Kurui, a single mother of 4 from Chepsirei village, Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet county,” he wrote.

Victorine’s mother had faced repeated disappointments from well-wishers who had promised help but failed to deliver. Sudi highlighted the struggles of the family and the importance of ensuring children get opportunities to pursue education.
“Kurui had received empty promises from well-wishers, shattering her dreams. I’m glad Victorine joined the school of her dreams, Segero Adventist in Soy, Uasin Gishu county,” he wrote.
Her story has sparked conversations about the need for better support systems for vulnerable children and their families.
Segero Adventist School, located in Soy, Uasin Gishu County, is now home to Victorine, where she will continue her studies with renewed hope and resources to pursue her education.
