The battle by the two groups namely Kikuyu Council of Elders (KCE) and Kiama Kia Ma have seen the installation of two patrons in less than a month.

Former Limuru Member of Parliament (MP) Peter Mwathi who subscribes to KCE was the first to be coronated in an event that the government authorised at the last minute.

Last Friday, former Limuru MP George Nyanja was also coronated in a colourful function which was attended by senior Kiambu county government officials as well as national government officers.

The two groups have been turned into political weapons with each one of them supporting a different Presidential aspirant during each general election.

During the last general election, Captain Kungu’s group supported President William Ruto while  Wachira’s faction vouched for the election of Azimio la Umoja-One Kenya supremo Raila Odinga.

Reliable sources who spoke to People Daily said the ongoing supremacy battle is being fanned by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua who wants to take over Mt. Kenya’s kingpin baton from former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“The Wachira group recognises Uhuru as the Mt.Kenya kingpin while the captain is Gachagua,” Tom  Kimani, an elder from Ndumberi stated.

Captain Kungu who happens to be Uhuru’s cousin, has more often than not told the media that the Wachira group has no capacity to speak on behalf of the community and should not be taken seriously.

Wachira on the other hand has been dismissing the Kungu faction as self-imposed power brokers out to mislead the region.

It’s worth noting that in August last year, the Wachira group which had endorsed Raila conceded defeat but insisted that backing the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader remained the wisest stand for the community regardless of the outcome of the polls.

“The community made an emotional decision but will soon sober up and regret its decision,” he said.

During Nyanja’s coronation which took place at Nderu stadium in Ndeiya sub-county, Nyanja said that he will endeavour to unite the two factions.

“My first assignment will be to unite our two groups so that we can forge forward as a united people. As I speak, I have the blessings of Wachira Wa Kiago,” he said.

Kungu who officiated the event urged Kenyans to support the government of the day and ignore calls by the opposition to engage in economic ‘sabotage’.

“Raila is telling you to walk to work or embrace vehicle pooling to deny the government revenue. It’s a fallacy which should be ignored by Kenyans,” he said.

He urged  Kenyans to persevere through the harsh economic times the country is currently undergoing noting that the situation will change for the better.
