Transport paralysed along Outer Ring Road as protests persist

Transport has been brought to a standstill along Nairobi’s Outer Ring Road on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, after protesters blocked sections of the busy highway, disrupting the movement of private vehicles and public service vehicles.

Videos obtained by People Daily Digital showed groups of protesters occupying parts of the road, forcing motorists to slow down and seek alternative routes as the demonstrations unfolded.

The footage also captured heavy traffic congestion stretching along the affected sections, with stranded commuters forced to wait as the protests continued.

A traffic alert issued during the demonstrations urged motorists to avoid some of Nairobi’s busiest roads.

“Traffic Alert: Motorists Urged to Avoid Outer Ring Road and Juja Road as Violent Protests Trigger Major Disruptions in Nairobi,” Metros Kenya, a platform for issuing real-time traffic-related updates, stated.

According to the placards by the protestors, the demos are linked to the disappearance of a local youth named Abdulaziz Duba Molo, popularly known as “Zizo” who went missing on June 25, 2026, during the Gen-Z protests and commemoration, and the area has been brought to a standstill.

Zizo is among the protestors who remain unaccounted for after some protestors were found abandoned in Nairobi’s Hurlingham area in the early hours of Saturday, June 27, 2026.

June 25 protests

The June 25 commemorations, held to honour victims of the 2024 anti-government protests, were marked by a heavy security presence across Nairobi and other towns.

According to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, police arrested 355 people during the demonstrations on suspicion of offences including robbery, malicious damage to property, obstruction of roads, and attempted theft.

Following the arrests, dozens of protesters were presented before various courts across the country, while others were reportedly released after processing.

The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has raised fresh concern over the whereabouts of people who reportedly disappeared during the June 25 commemorative protests, claiming that three more protesters have been found abandoned, bringing the total number of those recovered to six.

In an update issued on Saturday, June 27, 2026, the rights organisation said the three individuals were found after being subjected to enforced disappearance, adding that they reported being brutally assaulted while in custody.

“Three more comrades have been found dumped. Together with the three who were found earlier, they report being brutally assaulted by police while in custody,” KHRC said.
