Squatters in Trans Nzioa County now wants President Uhuru Kenyatta to honour his campaign pledge of settling them.

The over 100,000 Kiboroa families, who remained landless after the white settlers left the country, say their hope is dwindling since it only a year to the expiry of President Uhuru’s tenure.

‘’Many of our people whose great grandparents used to work as squatters on European farms still live in makeshift shelters on some of the farms now owned by those who inherited the farms’’, said Ainea Moses Masinde, Kiboroa squatters Alliance chairman.

Speaking to the People Daily in Kitale on Monday, Masinde regretted that many governments have failed to grant them justice.

The chairman lamented over the deplorable conditions they have been forced to live in despite several governments promises.

He said the squatters’ population was growing rapidly and families have been forced to fight over space in the temporary houses which are dilapidated.

He urged the President to honour his pledge and see them settled.

He said there was enough land that falls under the Agricultural Development Corporation (ADC) which remains uncultivated.

Masinde says most of them were forcefully removed from their homes during the 1992, 1997, 2008 and 2013 conflicts while others say they were born on white-owned farms where their grandfathers worked.
