UDA wrangles

Squabbles within the ruling United Democratic Movement (UDA) will continue to be scrutinised by members of the public.

What started as a trade of words between Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Sudi escalated to involve the party secretary general, Cleophas Malala.

Malala found himself at loggerheads with party members Sudi, Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga, Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, and his Public Service counterpart, Moses Kuria, as well as Githunguri MP Muthoni wa Muchomba, who were accused of disrespect by Malala.

Some, including Sudi and Wamuchomba, answered back to Malala, and the back and forth in the Kazi ni Kazi could escalate, especially going into the weekend.

Madaraka Day preparations

As the country looks forward to celebrating Madaraka Day on Saturday, June 1, the preparations in the host town of Bungoma are in top gear.

Sections of roads within the town were also upgraded. The upgraded roads include the 1.58 km circumferential road around Kericho open-air market, the 1 km K.I.E.-Isaac Salat Road, the 1.5 km Guru Nanak Temple-Mosque Road, and the 1.7 km Cemetery-Cereals-Siloam Road.

Streetlights were also erected within the entire town and along the highway, and the KDF was in charge of the facelift.

According to Internal Security Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, the theme of this year’s celebrations is agriculture and food security.

During the fete, the government is expected to explain how they have increased access to resources in order to reduce food production costs, eliminate the influence of cartels, and ultimately improve agricultural productivity and food security in the region.

Muguka ban

The Muguka ban by the coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, and Taita Taveta has caused a chaotic ripple effect.

The ban infuriated the counties producing Muguka, and even the State House was involved when President William Ruto met with leaders from Embu County a few days ago.

On May 30, violent confrontations over the ban on Muguka raged in Mombasa County, as transporters of the stimulant clashed bitterly with county enforcement teams.

At the cess collection point in Miritini, trucks ferrying Muguka were repulsed, leading to violent clashes between the two groups for the second day running.

After forcing entry into the port city of Mombasa and successfully accessing Kongowea Market on Wednesday, the transporters woke up to a rude shock after they ran into a heavily mobilized Mombasa County team ready to confront them.
