Ruto’s US engagements

With President William Ruto still in the United States for a five-day state visit, his engagements will be the topic of the day.

On Wednesday morning, the Head of State addressed the Fortune Company Chief Executive Officers in Atlanta, Georgia. Ruto stressed the need for a strong US-Kenya relationship, which he says will help in economic and democratic growth.

“Kenya means business. We urge international businesses to capitalise on the 60-year-old Kenya-U.S. relationship that is grounded in shared values of democracy, freedom, and enterprise to invest in Kenya. A good return on investment is guaranteed, especially in our renewable energy, housing, manufacturing, agriculture, and ICT sectors,” Ruto affirmed in a post on X.

The president also held talks with the mayor of Atlanta City and said that Kenya is keen on exploring the exchange of experiences and ideas with the city in areas of mutual interest, such as low-cost housing and urban development.

“We also look forward to establishing a twinning partnership between Nairobi and Atlanta for the benefit of our two cities,” the president said.

Further engagements on Wednesday will include a visit to Andrews Air Force Base, Arlington National Cemetery, and Congressional Engagements later, all in Washington, DC.

He is also set to have a tech roundtable at the White House.

Gachagua’s local trips, address

With the president outside the country, eyes will be on his deputy, Rigathi Gachagua, who recently made a public appearance after days away from the limelight.

Gachagua reemerged as an emboldened politician and has been championing economic rights for the Mount Kenya region.

As he pushes the one-man, one-vote, one-shilling agenda, Gachagua is expected to attract both support and opposition from across the political divide.

On May 21, during the funeral of his teacher, Gachagua made his stance on the one-man, one vote, one shilling call known.

“I am not very clever, but I am not stupid. I know a lot of issues that most people don’t know about. I made a decision as the senior leader in Mt. Kenya to unite everyone, irrespective of where they voted.

“I am here again, proposing one man, one shilling, and one vote. Anyone who opposes it in our region is just a traitor. Even during the time when we were fighting colonisation, these traitors still existed,” the DP said in Gichugu, Kirinyaga County.

With the rumoured fallout within UDA, Gachagua’s utterances are expected to be extremely monitored.
