Occupy JKIA protests
Protesters plan to occupy Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) on Tuesday, July 23, 2024.
The demonstrations are expected to draw attention and dominate media coverage with the response from security agencies who are already under scrutiny closely watched.
The National Police Service (NPS) cautioned protesters against entering restricted areas, citing the Protected Areas Act, Cap. 204 Laws of Kenya.
This legislation prohibits unauthorized access to designated protected zones, including the LPG Plant, Bitumen Plant, and petroleum depots at the Embakasi Aviation Depot (JKIA).
In their statement issued on Monday, July 22, 2024, the NPS reaffirmed their commitment to uphold public safety and national security, emphasizing the legal boundaries governing access to these sensitive areas.
“The Protected Areas Act, Cap. 204 Laws of Kenya, prevents the entry of unauthorized persons into areas that have been declared to be protected. The Protected Areas Order, as clarified under its Legal Notice No. 9 of 2011, Second Schedule, includes the LPG Plant, the Bitumen Plant, and petroleum depots situated at the Embakasi Aviation Depot (JKIA),” a statement by NPS on Monday, July 22, 2024, read.
Tuesday blackout
Kenya Power announced temporary blackouts affecting seven counties on Tuesday, July 23, 2024. In Kiambu County, areas like Thindigua, Kigwa Farm, and Fourways Junction will experience power outages from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Makueni County’s Wote area will be affected during the same period, impacting locations such as Sarova Market and Kiatine Primary.
Nakuru County’s Kiamunyi and Mercy Njeri areas will undergo power interruptions from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm, affecting several neighbourhoods including Olive Inn and Muiru Center. In Uasin Gishu County, Kamukunji and Block 10 will experience blackouts from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, affecting areas like Tabetaclan and Kibulgeny.
Kisii County will have Nduru, Nyamarambe, and part of Kisii Town affected from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, impacting locations such as Nyamarambe Market and Kisii Central Police Station. Nyeri County’s Kabebere and Kihuri areas will face power interruptions from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, affecting places like Gathunguri TBC and Kiandemi. Murang’a County will see outages in Pundamilia and Ndera from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, impacting areas including Makuyu Girls and Kariani Secondary School.
