40 per cent of Kenyans who took part in the survey conducted by Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) feel that some of the dismissed Cabinet Secretaries (CSs) should be re-appointed in the next cabinet based on their performances.

39 per cent of respondents aged between 18-34 years want performing former CSs re-appointed while another 42 per cent support the notion that some of the dismissed Cabinet Secretaries who performed well in their dockets should be given a second chance.

Regional response on re-appointment

North Eastern region topped the chart on those who supported the re-appointment of performing CSs with 63 per cent of the respondents endorsing the move.

Central region came in second with 47 per cent followed by Rift Valley at 46 per cent.

41 per cent of the respondents from the Eastern and Western regions agreed with TIFA’s question that performing Cabinet Secretaries should be re-appointed in the next cabinet by President William Ruto.

Coastal (38 per cent), Nairobi (25 per cent) and Nyanza regions recorded slightly less support for the re-appointment of the dismissed Cabinet Secretaries based on their performances before the fall of the axe.

“A significant proportion 40 per cent of Kenyans felt that performing Cabinet Secretaries should be re-appointed,” the survey read in part.

Those preferred for re-appointment

According to the survey, former CSs Kithure Kindiki, Eliud Owalo and Ezekiel Machogu were amongst the top three mentions for CSs who Kenyans would want to be re-appointed.

Kindiki led the chart with 61 per cent followed by Owalo at 48 per cent and former Education Cabinet Secretary Machogu with 23 per cent.

However, most Kenyans interviewed by TIFA did not want the former Water and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary Zachariah Njeru retained. Out of the 1,507, none vouched for Njeru.

Only one per cent of the respondents supported the re-appointment of Kipchumba Murkomen, Moses Kuria, Florence Bore, Mithika Linturi, Peninah Malonza, Njuguna Ndungú, Salim Mvurya and Simon Chelugui.

The TIFA survey was conducted between July 16, 2024, and July 17, 2024, involving a sample size of 1,507 all above 18 years. The responses were gathered through telephone interviews at the household level.

Ruto’s promise on next cabinet

President William Ruto pledged to form a government of national unity after dismissing 21 Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney General.

The Head of State indicated that his priority was forging a united front.

“This government of national unity that I am going to form will include everyone in moving this country forward and fighting corruption,” he said.
