Three feared trapped as Gachie building collapses
At least three people were feared trapped in a building, which collapsed in Gachie, Kiambu County yesterday.
According to witnesses, the workers were constructing the sixth floor when the building tumbled.
Residents blamed the incident on poor workmanship, saying the building had been put up hurriedly.
“Everything was going on as usual before we started seeing stones falling. They never waited for the other floors to dry completely, that is perhaps why the building collapsed,” John Kariuki said.
Kariuki said the building has been under construction for the last seven months.
Majority of the construction workers who were at the site at the time of the incident managed to escape from the collapsing building.
Efforts to rescue the three workers who were trapped in he building were underway by the time of going to press.
Kiambu police boss Ali Nuno allayed fears that some workers could have died during the incident.
“My team is on the ground and I can confirm that so far no death has been recorded. We have cordoned off the site already,” he said.
Nairobi and Kiambu are experiencing a construction boom with many buildings having more than 10 floors.
There have been concerns of structures being constructed without proper supervision. Last week, nine people died after a crane accident in Nairobi’s Hurlingham area.
