Susan Nakhumicha has weighed in on the kingpin debate in the Western region, asserting that the National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula is the de facto leader of the Luhya community.

Speaking on Saturday, December 20, 2025, Nakhumicha urged fellow leaders with similar ambition to take their place behind Wetang’ula.

One leader

“As Trans Nzoia, we know our leader here in Western is none other than Moses Wetang’ula.

“I would like to appeal to my fellow leaders that we can only have one leader at any time. We cannot have multiple leaders at a given time. I know we have brothers and sisters with ambitions, but I plead with them to queue behind Wetang’ula for now,” she said.

Nakhumicha also used the occasion to divulge her vision for Trans Nzoia County, where she is seeking to become the third governor after Francis Khaemba and the incumbent George Natembeya.

The former CS- who recently launched her bid to unseat the politician aligned with the united opposition- stated that she would be aligned with the government in her quest to bring development to the cosmopolitan county.

“In 2027, I will have ambitions of leading this county as the governor. I am working with President William Ruto for development. Trans Nzoia has lagged, with the governor only prioritising projects that benefit him and county staff solely.

“So far, the only projects undertaken in the county are the construction of county government offices, which are for the governor and his people. There have been no projects for the residents of the county. So, I want to appeal to the people here that I am ready to work for them as the governor,” she lamented.

The former CS of Health, who was dismissed at the height of the Gen Z protests of 2024, made a comeback to public service on May 20, 2025, after Ruto appointed her to a key diplomatic post, as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the Permanent Mission of Kenya to the UN-Habitat in Nairobi.

She officially assumed the role in April, following approval by the Defence, Intelligence, and Foreign Relations Committee of the National Assembly.
