Varsity students seek more internship opportunities
The government has been urged to create more internship opportunities for students in higher learning institutions to enable them to acquire and develop valuable technical and professional skills as well as work experience.
University students from various institutions decried that the lack of proper systems in the country continues to make them tarmac to find attachment opportunities in both public and private firms.
They blamed zero connections in their fields of study, limited opportunities in various sectors and non-payment of interns to failure by many to go for the crucial training that is in most cases part of their coursework.
In most universities, a student cannot qualify for graduation before he or she undergoes a three-month industrial attachment that is usually assumed as a practical training period that enables them to gain work experience and satisfy requirements for their qualification.
Led by Alfred Muriuki, a third-year Kenyatta University student, the learners called on the government to fast-track the establishment of areas of expertise where students can be deployed to prepare them for the work environment.
“We suffer so much to find attachment opportunities simply because we are so green to the work environment. We have zero network, there are limited opportunities and most other companies do not believe in having interns at their workplace. This makes the life of a university/college student very hard,” said Muriuki.
