The government has been urged to sack administrators who have failed to control illicit brews in parts of Nyahururu Sub County in Laikipia leading to the deaths of seven people in recent times.

Two of the victims were named as Anthony Muthiga Ngugi aged 50 and his neighbour William Wanyoike aged 48 died last week at Bondeni village, Gitumaba location of Marmanet Ward in the Sub County.

Ngugi and Wanyoike died while undergoing treatment at the Nyahururu County and Referral Hospital on Thursday last week after a drinking spree at a local home that is notorious for sale of the illicit brew.

The latest deaths triggered demonstrations by residents of the location who accused administrators and police of laxity in fighting against sale and consumption of the illicit brew.

Nyahururu Deputy County Commissioner Bernard Ondino said police had been instructed to track and arrest people dealing in illicit brew in the sub county.

“Chiefs and their assistants who fail to stop sale and consumption of illicit brews in this sub county will be sacked,” the Administrator warned.

Residents of Bodeni village claimed the illicit brew being consumed in the area was being transported from the neighbourhood of Rumuruti Municipality in Laikipia West Sub County by business people.

“Instead of police arresting the culprits they just collect money from drinking dens and leave,” said a resident who requested anonymity because he alleged that they get threatened when they raise alarm over the brews.
