State to spend Sh1.5b on climate change projects

Kenya Kwanza’s first budget presented yesterday leaned heavily towards climate change adopting the theme: Bottom – Up Economic Transformation and Climate change Mitigation / Adaptation for improved livelihoods of Kenyans.
The budget allocated Sh1.5 billion towards climate change with, Sh625 million proposed to enhance drought resilience and sustainable livelihood programmes, Sh318 million towards drought emergencies, and Sh300 million for crop insurance.
“To enhance financial flows from the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the government will continue to implement the National Green Climate Fund Strategy, which provides an elaborate framework of coordinating and attracting resources from the Green Climate Fund. The government will also implement the Financing Locally-led Climate Action Programme in collaboration with county governments and development partners to manage climate risks.”
The budget provided further avenues of financing towards climate going on to state that the government, “have agreed with the International Monetary Fund on a new 20-month Resilience and Sustainability Facility arrangement that will run in parallel with the current Programme arrangements until April 2025.”
