State to set up Boni forest cutline to fight terrorism
The government has announced plans to establish a cutline separating Boni forest & human habitation in Lamu County.
Interior cabinet secretary Kithure kindiki who toured the region, said that the planned line of demarcation between the forest and human habitation will help security officers separate law-abiding citizens from the enemy especially now that Boni Forest has been identified as one of the most notorious hideouts and favoured getaway routes for terrorists.
Official opening
Speaking during the official opening of Lamu East Sub-County Headquarters, CS Kithure Kindiki has area residents against crossing the cutline.
He said: “I appeal for cooperation as the government intensifies its efforts against radicalisation, violent extremism, and terror, which has become the biggest global security threat.”
Further, Kindiki reiterated that the government is progressively procuring more sophisticated equipment and protective gear for the personnel deployed in high-risk areas, with more resources also earmarked for construction of key security roads and infrastructure.
The CS was accompanied by Lamu Governor Issa Timamy, Deputy Governor Raphael Ndung’u, Senator Kamau Githuku and MP Ruweida Mohamed.
Meanwhile the CS has asked members of diverse communities living in Lamu County to coexist in peace and harmony and resist attempts to incite animosity in the guise of addressing historical grievances.
‘The Government has no problem with any community or religion as it confronts the challenge of terrorism and violent extremism. No community or religion will be profiled in the fight against crime. Criminals will be apprehended and prosecuted individually,” said Kindiki
Kindiki appreciated security officers whom he said had successfully thwarted many planned terror attacks, and commended them for their diligence, commitment, and patriotism.
