Stalled multi-million NOCK Plaza tops AGM agenda
The status of the controversial National Olympics Committee of Kenya (NOCK) headquarters in Nairobi, also known as NOCK Plaza, will be among key issues on the agenda during Friday’s Annual General Meeting.
NOCK top brass are set to discuss the way forward on the property in Upper Hill which has stalled due to lack of funds to clear a loan borrowed from a local bank in 2012 and was in danger of being auctioned early this year.
The Plaza which is valued at Sh1.2 billion, was designed in 2009 at a time when the Olympics body had no finances yet work had to be expedited.
The government had to step in to save the building from the auctioneers’ hammer after the build-operate financial plan failed to take off as envisioned with all avenues to pay up the loan appearing to have faded.
At the AGM, set to be chaired by NOCK president Paul Tergat, the matter will be of immediate urgency and has even attracted the interest of the International Olympics Committee (IOC).
Speaking to People Sport on Monday on the sidelines of the launch of the National Elite Youth Camp, NOCK acting Secretary General Francis Mutuku revealed that a concrete answer will come through after extensive deliberations.
“We are aware the matter is of huge interest and indeed we are seeking solutions. The General Assembly will provide the way forward on how to engage and make our dream come true. It is very important that answers can be provided because of posterity,” he said of the building which is projected to house amongst others the Olympic Museum and Olympic Sports Federation.
