Authorities in South Korea are probing the deaths of two people who died a few days after receiving Covid-19 vaccine, Reuters reports.

The two who are said to have had pre-existing conditions died after they were injected with AstraZeneca vaccine.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) launched the investigations as AstraZeneca maintained that its vaccine was studied extensively and its safety was ascertained after several clinical trials.

“KDCA is conducting epidemiological surveys with relevant local authorities…to confirm any link with inoculation,” KDCA Director Jeong Eun-kyeong said in a presser.

The investigations could not, however, associate the deaths to the vaccine.

Among the fatalities is a 63-year old patient who had a cerebrovascular disease. The patient is said to have developed fever four days after receiving the jab.

The other case was a patient, over 50 years old, who had diabetes and a cardiac disorder. The patient died only a day after receiving the vaccine.

The state agency said it would compensate over 430 million won(Sh38.5 million) for deaths occurring from Covid-19 vaccination.
