Police officers fired teargas canisters to disperse Mike Sonko supporters and journalists after Nairobi governor arrived for grilling at Integrity Centre.

Sonko was summoned by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) for allegedly giving false information in his 2017 EACC self-declaration forms.

In the chaos that ensued, Sonko was filmed slapping Standard Group photographer Collins Kweyu as he entered the EACC premises.

“When the Governor was arriving, we were just prepared to take photos. When Sonko arrived, he was barred from entering. The police started firing teargas while aiming at us (journalists). The police were seeing that we had cameras” said Mr Kweyu.

Traffic snarl-up quickly built up on Valley Road that leads to Integrity Centre as police dispersed the hundreds of Sonko supporters who had escorted him to the EACC headquarters.

Some motorists said they were pelted with stones by a section of Sonko supporters.

Sonko is facing EACC for allegedly giving false information prior to his election as the governor for Nairobi County in the 2017 General Election.
