The construction of the Talanta Sports Stadium in Nairobi has reached a significant milestone, with the 60,000-seater venue now 45% complete.

The ambitious project, inspected by Cabinet Secretary Soipan Tuya on May 22, 2025, is poised to play a key role as one of the key venues for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

This development marks a major step in Kenya’s Vision 2030 infrastructure goals and its bid to become a leading sports tourism destination in Africa.

It is located along Ngong Road in the Jamhuri Grounds, approximately 10 kilometres west of Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD). The Talanta Sports Stadium is a football and rugby-specific facility with no athletics track.

Adjacent to the stadium, outdoor training facilities, including a standard athletics track, a football field, and a shared rugby pitch, are also under development.

The project, managed by the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) under the Ministry of Defence, is being constructed by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC), a Chinese state-owned firm with a track record of major infrastructure projects across Africa, such as the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway.

Nairobi’s growing sports infrastructure

The stadium’s total built-up area spans 94,150 square meters, and its completion will add to Nairobi’s existing stadium infrastructure, which includes the 60,000-seater Moi International Sports Centre in Kasarani and the 30,000-seater Nyayo National Stadium.

The Talanta Sports City project is expected to expand Kenya’s capacity to host international sporting events, create employment opportunities, and stimulate the sports value chain.

This iconic sports city will not only elevate Kenya’s profile as a sporting destination but also open up new avenues for business and job creation,” Tuya said during the inspection tour, which was attended by Defence PS Patrick Mariru and KDF’s Engineering Brigade Commander Brig Joseph Mutua.
