Silvanus Osoro urges leaders not to shy away from politics at Onyonka’s mother’s funeral

Silvanus Osoro has urged politicians not to shy away from speaking about politics during the burial of the mother of Richard Onyonka.

Speaking during a condolence visit to the senator’s home in Utawala on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, the majority whip told leaders present that, since Onyonka is their colleague, they should not be afraid to take the opportunity to throw jabs at their political opponents during the funeral.

Nimeskia Nyakundi akisema siku hio tuweke siasa kando, mheshimiwa Onyonka ni mmoja wetu; ukipata fursa ya kulima mtu wewe lima. It’s your moment; lima rarua, fanya kila kitu,” Osoro said.

Despite being on the opposite side of the political divide from Onyonka, Osoro admitted that he expects to be attacked by leaders allied to the United Opposition.

According to him, the funeral is likely to attract many opposition figures, as it will take place in the jurisdiction of Antony Kibagendi, a Linda Mwananchi member, alongside Onyonka and allies of the Jubilee flag bearer Fred Matiang’i, a key figure within the United Alternative Government alliance.

He said he is ready to be attacked and will sit and listen to any jabs from his opponents, emphasising that there is no enmity in politics. He added that, in his time in politics, he has learnt not to take matters personally, noting that some of the people he once opposed have since joined Kenya Kwanza and been accorded high-ranking government positions.

Osoro further noted that while they may be political enemies now, their paths could cross in the future, stressing that there is no need to take political differences to heart.

Funeral itinerary

Teresia Nyaboke Onyonka, the mother of outspoken Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, will be interred in Kisii in a private funeral ceremony to be held at her home.

This announcement was made by Kitutu Chache South MP Antony Kibagendi during the visitation of several leaders drawn from different political divides, led by Education Cabinet Secretary Migosi Ogamba, on Wednesday, May 6, 2026.

Kibagendi, who will also be the MC during the funeral, provided the itinerary, stating that a major fundraising will take place at All Saints Cathedral from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm on Tuesday, May 12, 2026.

He further stated that the body of the late will leave Nairobi very early in the morning for Kisii on Thursday, May 14, 2026, where a mass will be held at Nyabururu at 2:00 pm, and viewing of the body will also take place.

On the following day, which will be the burial day, the body of the late will be taken to Mosocho, where the funeral ceremony will take place. Thereafter, a private interment ceremony will be held at her home, where only family members will be allowed to conduct the final rites.

“The following day we will move to Mosocho, where the funeral ceremony will take place at Monak Grounds. After that, the body of the late will head home for a private interment ceremony, where the family will be allowed to carry out the final rites,” Kibagendi stated.
