Kakamega Homeboyz boss Cleophas Shimanyula has called on Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Nick Mwendwa to call a meeting with the top teams in the country to iron out some pertinent issues that threaten to kill local football.

The call comes shortly after Gor Mahia were declared the Kenyan Premier League 2019/20 champions by Mwedwa on Friday, a decision that has generated some heat from other teams and the league’s governing body KPL.

Speaking in Kakamega on Saturday, Shimanyula said Mwendwa has some questions to answer for rushing in making a decision without consulting other key stakeholders in the industry.

“I am calling upon FKF president Mwndwa not to be sacred but plan and meet the chairmen of Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards, Tusker and Homeboyz to address major issues affecting our local football,” said Shimanyula while dismissing Mwndwa’s excuse of being pressured by Confederation of African Football (CAF) to submit the teams that will represent the country in continental championships next year.

“I am waiting to see if the same deadline will be applied to Uganda and Tanzania who are also facing similar challenges just as rest of the world. We could be taken for a ride by someone furthering his own interests.

The issue of deciding the teams to represent the country in continental championships should have been handled cautiously so that we can have strong sides that can compete with other top teams in Africa ,” he added.

“The style of football management in the country has remained wanting with a federation that is also not reading from the same script with KPL that is mandated to run the league. Its high time Mwendwa swallowed his pride and learn to work with other stakeholders,” said Shimanyula.

Homeboyz were second on the KPL table with 47 points, four behind Gor Mahia before the league was halted due to the coronavirus, and while his dream of seeing his team win the league has been scuttled, Shimanyula still hopes that will happen in the near future.
