Shajani for Gaspo as WPL preps start
Gaspo Youth begin their training today in preparation for the new Kenya Women’s Premier League (WPL) season scheduled to kick off on November 28 where they are set to take on Zetech Sparks in the league opener.
While the title contenders have maintained a bulk of their squad that came close to clinching a maiden league trophy last season after coming in second, the side will benefit from the services of budding teenage sensation Unaizah Shajani who is joining the side for an undisclosed period of time.
Shajani, a former Aga Khan Academy player brings with her a wealth of experience having been part of the IHM Football Academy in Manchester.
The defensive midfielder who can also play on attack had signed for Spanish side CF Joventut Almassora from Bury WFC during the 2019/20 season,
“I cannot divulge more information about the deal but I can confirm that Shajani will be part of the squad making it 24 players for the season ahead.
She adds to the team’s depth and her experience will go a long way in helping us fight for the title, “ said Gaspo coach Edward Githua.
He continued: “We haven’t been able to begin training as we had to wait for clearance to use our training grounds at State House.
That is a process but finally we have the go-ahead and we will hit the ground running.
However, all players have remained active, training on their own since March and we will take it from there.”
Before the league breaks for the festivities, Gaspo will play four matches against Zetech Sparks, Thika Queens, Kayole Starlets and Kibera Girls.
“We picked home and away wins against three of the teams with the exception of Thika last season.
We won our home match against Thika and picked a draw on their own turf. Our wins against Kayole were laboured and we expect stiff competition from all these teams.
We, therefore, intend to take each match with the same seriousness as we cannot underrate any opponent,” added Githua.
