September 5, 2023: Top news events to look out for today
Here is what you need to know in order to get up to speed with Tuesday’s happenings.
Africa Climate Summit
More leaders are expected in Nairobi for the three-day inaugural Africa Climate Summit at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
The summit is co-chaired by President William Ruto and the African Union, and more world leaders are set to address the function. 20 heads of state from Africa are expected to arrive in the country, and the first ones to arrive were presidents from Burundi, Ghana, Comoros, the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic, and Sierra Leone.
John Kerry, US Special Envoy for Climate, Ban Ki-Moon, the Global Green Growth Initiative chairperson, AU Commission chair Moussa Faki, and International Renewable Energy Agency director general Francesco La Camera are some of the leaders expected to address the meeting.
Others are UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland, and Axel van Trotsenburg, the Senior Managing Director of the World Bank.
The Climate Summit that started on August 4 will end on Wednesday, September 6.
Harambee Stars intensify training
The Kenya national football team Harambee Stars will intensify their training sessions ahead of two friendly matches against Qatar and South Sudan.
Captain Michael Olunga, who plays for Al Duhail SC; Alfred Scriven (IL Hodd, Norway); Ian Otieno (Zesco United, Zambia); and Clarke Oduor (Bradford City, England) have all arrived for the friendlies.
Brian Mandela, Daniel Anyembe, Amos Nondi, and Timothy Ouma are expected in camp for day three training, while Ayub Timbe is expected to join the team in Doha on Wednesday.
Kenya will face Qatar on Thursday, September 7, 2023, before their next game against South Sudan during the FIFA international break.

Leaders to mourn freedom fighter
Top leaders from across the political divide are expected to mourn the death of Kenya’s freedom fighter, Field Marshall Muthoni.

Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is among the first leaders to mourn Muthoni, whom he described as a gallant fighter.
“I have woken up to sad news of the passing on of Field Marshall Muthoni Kirima, the gallant freedom fighter who fought side by side with Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri in the Mt. Kenya and Aberdare forests to drive colonialists from our land,” Gachagua said in a statement.
