Senior officer in Siaya journalist death probe dies

A senior police inspector in whose house a journalist was found murdered on November 21, 2019 in Ugunja, Siaya County has been found dead in Matungulu, Machakos.

The body of  Sabina Kerubo was found in her single room in Komarock.

According to senior officers who visited the scene, the body looked weak and emaciated and there were indications that she had over indulged in alcohol.

A report made at KBC Police Station, Occurrence Book number 17/22/12/2020 by a man identified as Philip Monta and who claimed the deceased was his girlfriend.

Matungulu OCPD and his Directorate of Criminal Investigations counterpart visited the scene and found the body on a mattress on the floor.

“The deceased looked weak and emancipated in her single room with some empty glasses and jugs with remnants of keg beer in them,” a brief to police headquarters indicated.

According to the deceased’s mother, Elizabeth Kwamboka, who resides along Kangundo road, the deceased had previously refused to stay with the family.

The mother also said Kerubo would occasionally assault her, due to drunkenness, while they were staying together.

She had been transferred from Western region to police headquarters where she had been attending counselling sessions.

Kerubo was born on April 30, 1984. Formerly of Ugunja police station, Kerubo  had last year, together with two other suspects, been charged with the murder of her boyfriend Eric Oloo, a journalist with The Star newspaper.

She was suspected to have ganged up with two brothers; Victor Lutta and Frankline Lutta, attacked and killed Oloo, on the night of November 21 in Uhor village, Ugunja Sub-County.

Kerubo had been cohabiting with Oloo since February 2018.

Reports then indicated that a caterer, Victor, who was having an affair with Kerubo had visited to prepare special dish as requested by Kerubo and a bitter exchange ensued  between Oloo and the caterer.

Kerubo then requested the landlord, Moses Ochieng to give him a vehicle to move Oloo to the hospital claiming he was ill and suffering from pressure and diabetes.

The landlord, however, established that Oloo was already dead and his body wrapped in a blood-stained bedsheet.

He then declined to carry the body and alerted the police.

Kerubo was later accused of threatening ‘Nation’ journalist Dickens Wasonga for allegedly “damaging her reputation”.

She is reported to have called the journalist and accused him of failing to get her side of the story in connection to the murder of Oloo.
