Senators back petition on military veterans welfare

Senators have backed a petition seeking the enactment of a law to address the welfare of military veterans, their families and descendants.
The petition, drafted by six persons and tabled by Vihiga Senator George Khaniri, wants the sacrifices of veterans recognised and provide an avenue for addressing their complaints and concerns.
The petitioners include Major (Rtd) Lucy Wairimu Mukuria of True North Society, Rosemary Otieno, Chalsea Mugambi, Nancy Wanjugu Kamau, Joseph Gitumbe and Mary Kittakah.
They argue that as a result of neglect, many retired service men and women and their families are leading miserable lives.
Senate Leader of Majority Kipchumba Murkomen lauded the petition, saying the law would address the plight of veteran soldiers who suffered post-traumatic stress disorder associated with service.
“I think it is only in Kenya where veterans are not a serious issue. All over the world, particularly in developed countries, the agenda of veterans and retired policemen is a big deal,” he said.
Senators Mutula Kilonzo (Makueni), Enock Wambua (Kitui), Ochillo Ayacko (Migori), Samson Cherargei (Nandi) and Abdullahi Ali (Wajir) concurred on the need to establish a law that takes care of the retired soldiers, saying they spend most of their productive days serving the country.
Other than recognition, Mutula wants the government to provide the ex-soldiers with jobs.
