High-level security teams from Narok and Nakuru counties have been deployed in the clash-hit Olpusimoru area to restore calm after night of attacks from two warring communities.

Rift Valley Regional Commissioner George Natembeya confirmed that security has been beefed up at the border town to quell further attacks warning communities against any retaliatory aggression.

Natembeya said the fighting allegedly began after an incident involving stolen livestock where one person lost his life. Police are pursuing several suspects, he said.

He at the same time called on the communities to remain calm and allow security agencies to deal with the situation.

One confirmed dead

“Teams have been deployed to support the local police with firm instructions to quell recurrence of violence and arrest any law breaker,” said Natembeya.

Kuresoi South Sub-County Police Commander Henry Nyaranga said three people had been taken to Olenguruone Sub County Hospital with arrows lodged in their bodies.

He noted that so far only one person has been confirmed dead as a result of the incident with his body taken to the facility’s morgue.

“One body has been brought to Olenguruone and three others with arrows lodged in their bodies, though the attacks are in the Narok side,” said Nyaranga.

It is alleged that the fight broke out after a Form One student who was herding cattle at Olmariko area was shot in the thigh but was lucky to sprint home and was rushed to hospital.

Olenguruone Sub-County Hospital Medical Superintendent Solomon Bera said the deceased had been identified as 30-year-old Patrick Lenai.

He confirmed that two of the three patients brought in are in stable condition and are currently undergoing routine checkups adding that the other one with an arrow in the head had been transferred to the Nakuru Level Six Hospital.

“So far we don’t have any new admissions in regards to the clashes however the ones under our care are in stable condition,” said Bera.

At the time of going to press, several houses in Baghdad and Tegat areas had been torched overnight in retaliatory attacks, as tension remains high.
