Security gets Sh338 billion, KDF allocated lion’s share

Security agencies have been allocated Sh338.2 billion to support operations this financial year.
This is an increase of Sh20.4 billion compared to the Sh317.8 allocated in to the last financial year.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) received the highest allocation of Sh144.9 billion, followed by the National Police Service 98.6 billion, National Intelligence Service (NIS) Sh44.3 billion and the Kenya Prison Services Sh31.3 billion.
A further Sh8.8 billion has been proposed for the leasing of police vehicles.
To better equip the police, the Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u allocated Sh500 million for the Police Modernisation Programme.
The CS said he will later be requesting Parliament for enhanced funding approval once the ongoing discussion on a Comprehensive Police Modernisation Programme is concluded.Housing
To step up war on crime and enhance support to administration of justice, Treasury has proposed to the National Assembly to effect budget allocation of Sh856 million to equip the National Forensic Laboratory.
The CS said improvement of the welfare of the disciplined forces was at the centre of the Kenya Kwanza administration and to improve housing and accommodation, delivery of staff houses will be fast-tracked through the Public Private Partnership Framework.
The KDF has already been allowed to retain Sh534 million currently collected from rental income and apply it towards repayment of the houses once complete.
Regarding the Taskforce to review the terms and conditions of the Police, the CS said Kenya Prisons and National Youth Service, they will be presenting a funding proposal to Parliament once discussions are concluded.
Sh2.9 billion has been allocated for the Group Personal Insurance for Police and Prisons Services and Sh5.8 billion for Medical Insurance for Police and Prisons Services.
