Scores injured as Nyamira MCAs, Speaker goons clash
At least seven people were yesterday seriously injured when supporters of Nyamira County Assembly Speaker Enock Okero clashed with those allied to 22 MCAs who suspended him last week.
Trouble started when Okero wanted to use hired goons to get access into his offices, which were closed down last week by being wielded by the MCAs, who are against his leadership, which they termed as dictatorial and corrupt.
The speaker who was in the company of the MCA’s allied to him said: “I have not committed any mistake to have me suspended from the Assembly. I am ready to use all legal avenues in making sure that I retain my seat” he told journalist outside the Assembly precincts .
Police officers from Nyamira South Divisional headquarters under the command of the area OCPD Martin Wambugu also suffered some minor injuries after being pelted with stones from both ends as they engaged the two camps in running battles.
To the surprise of many the county assembly staff ganged up with the 22 MCAs in making sure the speaker did not get access to his offices by chanting anti-slogans him. Last Tuesday chaos erupted at the assembly after members forcefully ejected Speaker Okero from his seat over allegations of impropriety.
Yesterday the MCAs who are against the speakers leadership led by the deputy speaker Thaddeus Nyabaro said: “We will not allow him to come back to the Assembly because he has committed many crimes including the one of today of inciting the public against us.”
