Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Kalerwa Salasya has continued to woo the electorate with promises as he seeks to take a stab at the country’s top seat.

In a brief statement on Saturday, October 25, 2025, the first-time legislator promised to get rid of the old trains and introduce quicker and modern ones.

The lawmaker made the promise while in Ethiopia, where he observed that the train network in that neighbouring country was fast and efficient.

“I will replace the old outdated fuel train with modern train as your 6th President . This train runs from Addis to Djibouti. It’s an electric one.I have a lot to do as your 6th President,” Salasya wrote on X.

The main railway service in Kenya at the moment is the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), operated by the Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC). It connects Nairobi to Mombasa. The extensive network of routes covers Nairobi, Athi River, Emali, Kibwezi, Mtito Andei, Voi, Maisenyi, Mariakani, and Mombasa.

In addition, there is the older meter-gauge railway (MGR) network, freight services, and commuter trains in Nairobi.

Extension plans

Currently, the government is exploring ways to connect Kenya to the neighbouring countries like Uganda, Rwanda, and South Sudan with a modern standard-gauge system.

During President William Ruto’s visit to China, the government discussed a new funding model for the new railway line, which is expected to connect Naivasha to Malaba, passing through several counties, including Narok, Bomet, Kericho, and Kisumu.

This project is part of Kenya’s broader strategy to enhance transportation infrastructure and connectivity within the region. The Naivasha-Kisumu section, known as Phase 2B of the SGR, will stretch 262.3 km and will include an 8.9 km branch line leading to the proposed Kisumu port.

It is expected to have over 20 stations across different parts of the country.

Salasya on leadership

Besides the trains promise, Salasya also vowed to dedicate himself to serving the nation fully if elected the country’s head of state.

“After stepping here at the tomb of King Emperor Prophet HAILE SELLASE, I feel powered, energized, and ready to serve humanity. One lesson here if you dedicate yourself to serving humanity, no one can erase your name in history the way we can’t erase Kibaki in our hearts. Kibaki ruled only for 10 years, but his record is clear,” the youthful lawmaker further wrote on X.
