Sakaja, State pen Sh1.7b feeding deal
By Alvin.Mwangi, July 19, 2023Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has received a boost in his School Feeding Programme after he signed an Sh1.7 billion Intergovernmental Partnership Agreement (IPA) on the Implementation of the school meals programme with the National Government.
The Sh1.7 billion agreement sets the terms of understanding between the parties in the implementation of the school meals programme in public primary schools in Nairobi.
As per the IPA, funds for the programme shall be drawn from both the Consolidated Fund and the County Revenue Fund.
Treasury Cabinet Secretary Njuguna Ndung’u who witnessed the signing said the programme will have a ripple effect on the economy, increase education attainment for improved human capital and improve smart agriculture in the supply chain.
Education CS Ezekiel Machogu said that his ministry will expand the programme to other counties. “The programme will go a long way in attracting and retaining learners in school and improving the learning outcomes,” he said.
During the launch of the program last month, President William Ruto said his administration will ensure that every county that decides to allocate money for the feeding program is boosted with additional funding from the national government.
“We are going to match counties who have a plan on school feeding program shilling for a shilling. When we do that we can actually feed 8 million children in our schools.
