Sabina Chege warns opposition from underrating Ruto
By Luke Oluoch, September 17, 2025Nominated Member of Parliament (MP) Sabina Chege has implored politicians to end their obsession with the upcoming political succession and discharge their representative functions.
Speaking to a local TV station on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, the lawmaker asserted that it was time for MPs to think hard about what their role of representation entails.
Chege also appealed to the voters to scrutinise politicians while calling out those whose only role has been aligning themselves with specific political heads while abdicating their individual mandates.
This comes days after the former deputy president, Rigathi Gachagua, claimed that Ruto plans to sponsor a presidential candidate from Murang’a.
Fixation with presidency
“As MPs, we cannot have an excuse to say Ruto has failed us. We have the mandate; senators oversee the counties. We are so fixated and obsessed with the person who is becoming the next president. We need to currently state what we have achieved in our respective positions,” she added.
“The political field has been reduced to a showdown of ‘I am supporting so-and-so’ without even laying down what they have been able to get done in the time they have been representing people,” she added.
On a political note, the government-aligned lawmaker warned the opposition of underrating Ruto, stressing that a day in politics is a long time.
“I want to tell the United Opposition not to underrate the power of William Ruto. He won when he was competing against the state.
“They need to embrace the reality of the possibility of his reelection much more against an opposition fighting for a specific position and without a specific agenda for Kenyans,” he stated.

The former Murang’a County Women’s representative also weighed in on the debate over Democracy For Citizens Party (DCP) Leader Rigathi Gachagua’s presidential eligibility.
Chege stated that the former DP could contest the 2027 election, as he has not exhausted avenues to appeal his impeachment in 2024.
“I think, unless all avenues of appeal have been exhausted, Rigathi Gachagua may have a chance to vie in 2027. We have cases of impeached people who were cleared at the last minute,” she stated.
“If someone is impeached, they cannot vie for the position, but the question is, have they exhausted the avenues available to them?”
Chege further called for more clarity on the matter, stressing that the issue of eligibility needs to be fast-tracked.
