Ruto’s appeal for unity encounters hurdle in Nyali as two leaders bicker

President William Ruto’s call for unity faces a rough road ahead, with a bitter feud unfolding between two of his trusted United Democratic Alliance lieutenants.

As Ruto concluded his whirlwind four-day tour of the Coast, he came face-to-face with a simmering rivalry between the two outspoken legislators in Nyali constituency, Mombasa County, during his morning programme – Nyali MP Mohamed Ali and East African Legislative Assembly member Hassan Omar Hassan.

The two lawmakers, backed by charged supporters, presented Ruto with the delicate task of playing peacemaker.

“I have said I will form a government that unites all Kenyans so that all the youth, leaders, and Kenyans unite for a common goal of moving the country forward,” Ruto said.  “We need to utilise the strength and education of the youth of this country to grow our economy.”

He promised to launch the first phase of 2,000 affordable housing units in the VOK area next month, a project that he said will require over 5,000 young workers.

For such programmes to succeed, the President said, there is a need for unity and collaboration beyond political affiliations.

“Despite coming from different political formations, we must put the country’s interests first by embracing unity and teamwork,” he said.

“Nyali people, I am humbly pleading for unity. I can see here in Nyali there is a supremacy battle. My call for you is just one: support us in this cause because Kenya and Kenyans are more important than the popularity of our leaders,” Ruto pleaded.

“Let us preach the politics of peace and unite our people. We need to focus on issues that can benefit our people by creating gainful employment.”

The President made the remarks during the opening of the Pwani School for the Mentally Challenged tuition block and laying of a foundation stone for Nyali Technical and Vocational Education and Training.

Technical and vocational centres, he said, will empower young people with technical skills.

“This will ensure they have market-ready skills that will boost our resolve to curb unemployment and, at the same time, boost our manufacturing and industrialisation efforts.”

Elsewhere, the President continued his theme of pledges about “plans” and “allocations” for development projects.

In Tana River County, where he  commissioned some projects, Ruto promised that the government will expand the acreage under irrigation in arid and semi-arid areas to enhance food insecurity.

He said Sh450 million was allocated to the Bura and Tana Delta irrigation projects to boost food production. “We are committed to producing enough food and eliminating the shame of hunger in our country,” he said.

Earlier, in Garsen, where he opened Ngao Girls Secondary School, he announced that Sh400 million would be used to connect 6,000 households to electricity under the last-mile connectivity programme. Addressing residents in Ngao, Ruto pledged Sh5 million for a hostel at the secondary and asked for their support for a united government.

Noting that Tana River is prone to floods when it rains, he announced that affected residents would be moved to safer areas. “The government is also building four markets in the county for Sh250 million to improve the working environment for small-scale traders, including mama mboga and boda bodas,” he said.

While in Tana River, the President laid a foundation stone for the ESP Market and commissioned a water project in Bangale. He was with Senate Speaker Amason Kingi, Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana, and several MPs and MCAs.
