President William Ruto has placed the worsening Sudan conflict at the heart of his diplomatic engagements, urging the European Union to help Africa push for a united and credible path to peace.

Ruto met European Union Council President António Costa on the sidelines of the 7th African Union–European Union Summit in Luanda, Angola, where he expressed deep concern over the escalating humanitarian tragedy.

Speaking through an X post posted on Tuesday, November 25, 2025, the president painted a grim picture of the situation in Sudan, stressing that countless families were suffering amid widespread destruction.

“We discussed the grave situation in Sudan, including the loss of life, the humanitarian crisis, and the destruction of public and private property and infrastructure,” he stated.

Ruto emphasised that the conflict could not be resolved through force, insisting that the country needs a political process that respects all voices. “Sudan needs an inclusive political settlement that brings in all stakeholders, including political parties, civil society, and other national actors,” he wrote

The president made it clear that stability in Sudan will only come through a credible, people-centred approach. He warned against military domination in the peace process. “A military path cannot deliver lasting peace,” he stated, adding that a credible process will bring stability in Sudan.

“Only a broad, credible process can bring stability and restore hope for the Sudanese people,” Ruto stated, underscoring Kenya’s commitment to supporting long-term peace efforts in the region.

His message highlighted the human suffering at the centre of the conflict, calling for international solidarity to help Sudan rebuild and heal.

Kenya-EU relations

Ruto reaffirmed the long-standing relationship between Kenya and the EU, noting that the bond has strengthened significantly over the years.

“Kenya and the European Union enjoy a strong partnership built on many years of collaboration and elevated by the Economic Partnership Agreement, which came into force in July 2024,” he wrote.

He emphasised that the new trade deal had opened the door for more Kenyan products to reach European shelves. “This agreement gives Kenya duty-free and quota-free access to the EU’s 450 million market, opening new opportunities for our agricultural products,” Ruto said.

This access brings hope for farmers and exporters who have long sought fairer entry into global markets.

But beyond trade, the president used the opportunity to press for deeper political collaboration. Ruto called on the EU to support Africa’s push to strengthen the African Union, saying the continent needs a united voice that can effectively address challenges facing its people.

“We call on the EU to support our agenda of reforming the African Union so that it can be fit-for-purpose as Africa’s unified and effective voice,” he said, adding that technical strength and Europe’s experience will build a better AU. “Europe’s experience and technical strength can help us build an AU that responds to the needs and aspirations of our people,” he wrote
