Ruto set for historic State Visit to Finland after South Africa tour
President William Ruto is set to undertake a historic state visit to Finland on June 10–11, 2026, just days after concluding his official engagements in South Africa, in a diplomatic tour expected to strengthen Kenya’s global partnerships and expand economic cooperation with Europe.
The visit will be hosted by the President of the Republic of Finland, Alexander Stubb, and his spouse, Suzanne Innes-Stubb, marking a significant moment in Kenya–Finland relations as the two countries deepen bilateral and multilateral cooperation.
According to an official statement shared by the Office of the President of the Republic of Finland on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, the visit to Finland will centre on strengthening diplomatic relations, expanding trade ties, and enhancing cooperation on global issues, including reform of the multilateral system, peace mediation, and development of the United Nations framework.
The two leaders are also expected to discuss regional stability issues in Africa and Europe, as well as global geopolitical developments, including the situation in the Middle East.
Kenya is expected to use the visit to position itself as a strategic gateway for Nordic investment into East Africa, particularly in technology, green energy, education, and innovation sectors.
“The President of the Republic of Kenya, William Samoei Ruto, and his wife, Rachel Ruto, will arrive on a state visit to Finland on 10–11 June 2026. The visit will be hosted by the President of the Republic, Alexander Stubb, together with his wife, Suzanne Innes-Stubb,” the statement reads in part.
“The key themes of the state visit are deepening bilateral relations between Finland and Kenya and strengthening cooperation between the countries in international contexts, reforming the multilateral system, and promoting trade between Finland and Kenya.”

High-level state ceremonies in Helsinki
President Ruto and First Lady Rachel Ruto will be officially received with state ceremonies on June 10 at the Presidential Palace in Helsinki.
The Finnish public will be able to witness the ceremonial welcome from Market Square at approximately 10 a.m., underscoring the high-profile nature of the visit.
Following the reception, official bilateral talks will be held at the Presidential Palace, culminating in a joint press briefing by the two Heads of State.
Packed diplomatic and economic agenda
President Ruto’s schedule includes a series of high-level engagements designed to deepen economic and institutional cooperation between Kenya and Finland.
These include a lunch hosted by Helsinki Mayor Daniel Sazonov, a wreath-laying ceremony at Hietaniemi Cemetery, a meeting with Speaker of Parliament Jussi Halla-aho, participation in a high-level panel discussion titled “The Promise of Peace” focused on UN reform and global mediation, and a gala dinner hosted by the Finnish presidential couple at the Presidential Palace.
On June 11, the leaders are expected to participate in a business forum at the Nokia Executive Experience Center in Espoo, bringing together Finnish and Kenyan companies to explore investment and trade opportunities.
The state visit will also highlight cooperation in innovation, digital transformation, and emerging technologies.
Finnish companies are expected to explore opportunities in Kenya’s growing technology and manufacturing sectors, while Kenyan businesses will be looking to tap into Finland’s advanced expertise in education systems, health technology, and clean energy.
Before departing Finland, President Ruto is also expected to meet Kenyans living in Finland, reinforcing ties with the diaspora community and discussing their role in national development and investment.
Ruto’s South Africa tour
The Finland visit follows closely after President Ruto’s engagements in South Africa.
Ruto is set to depart for South Africa for a three-day state visit, in a diplomatic engagement aimed at strengthening bilateral relations between Nairobi and Pretoria.

The visit, scheduled from June 3 to 5, 2026, follows an invitation by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and will see the Kenyan Head of State hosted at the Union Buildings in Tshwane.
According to official communication from the South African Presidency dated Friday, May 29, 2026, the State Visit underscores the long-standing cordial relations between Kenya and South Africa, which were re-established in 1994.
South Africa described Kenya as a strategic partner in the East African region and across the continent, noting that the two countries continue to enjoy mutually beneficial political and economic ties.
“President Cyril Ramaphosa will on Thursday, 4 June 2026, host His Excellency President William Samoei Ruto of the Republic of Kenya on a State Visit at the Union Buildings in Tshwane. President Ruto will undertake the State Visit from 3 to 5 June 2026 at the invitation of President Ramaphosa,” the statement reads in part.
“South Africa and Kenya enjoy long-standing mutually beneficial and cordial relations that were re-established in 1994. South Africa values Kenya as a strategic partner in the East African region and the continent.”
